Read the project description and answer the questions below: The 8th grade social studies and language arts teachers are developing a month-long geography project that will help students learn about other cultures and their impact on the lives of people who live in that culture. Students will use the results of their investigation to address the Driving Question: “Would I be the same person if I lived in a different place?” Students are expected to master the basics of longitude and latitude, and will create a realistic papier-mache globe to show that they understand the geography of the area they have chosen to study. In groups, they will present their research findings to the class, as well as complete an individual essay. Based on the presentations, the class will then discuss how geography affects cultural values and personality. Students will then form into new groups that will focus on a different aspect of place (natural environment, transportation, weather, etc.) and investigate their own community. Each group will create a chapter for the culminating product—a published book on the local community that will be donated to the local library and displayed there. |
